Divorce.

In Indiana, “dissolution of marriage” is the legal term given to divorce. You do not need an attorney to file for a dissolution of marriage. However, there are several steps in the process. Basic steps include filing petitions, having a Provisional Order Hearing, and a Final Settlement. There are also several issues to consider. Some of these include paternity issues, child custody (both physical and medical), child support, spousal maintenance, parenting time (commonly known as visitation), etc.

It’s important to get the desired decision the first time because they are not easily reversible. An attorney can help you with the nuances of this process. I’m not sure I want to get divorced. Is there any other legal recourse? Yes, you can file for legal separation, where you and your spouse can be legally separated for up to one year. What is Spousal Maintenance? Spousal maintenance is similar to alimony in other states.

However, unlike alimony, spousal maintenance is not easily obtainable. In fact, it is only awarded in a few specific instances.
